Safety

A Care-First,
Research-Informed Approach

At Afterlight, we believe that meaningful inner work begins with care, honesty, and respect for each person’s readiness. Our approach is shaped by contemporary research and ethical practice that place safety, context, autonomy, and integration at the heart of psilocybin-assisted therapy. We honour the fact that every person’s journey is unique and that transformation unfolds in relationship —
not just to the medicine, but to the support around it.

Contemporary research, including the work of Professor David Luke, shows that psychedelic experiences are deeply influenced by mindset, environment, preparation, and the quality of care and support, not only by the substance itself.
These insights guide how we design our retreats, support participants, and approach
safety at every stage.

Safety Begins
Before the Experience

✴️ Gentle Screening and Thoughtful Preparation
Psilocybin can be deeply meaningful for many people, yet it is not suitable for everyone or every moment in life. Emotional sensitivity, unexpected material, or periods of vulnerability can arise, particularly without adequate preparation and support.

For this reason, we take screening and preparation seriously and approach them with care and openness. Before acceptance, we spend time getting to know you and your circumstances so we can understand whether this experience is supportive for you at this point in your life.

We gently explore mental and emotional health history, physical health considerations, current medications and supplements, past experiences with altered states, and your intentions, expectations, and concerns. This process is informed by established safety guidelines from clinical psychedelic research and is designed to protect wellbeing rather than push participation.

These conversations help us move forward in a way that feels steady, respectful, and well held — or to pause or redirect if that feels more appropriate.

✴️ Consent, Choice, and Personal Agency
Your autonomy is central to the Afterlight experience.

Participation is always by invitation and choice — there is no pressure, no assumption you must continue, and no requirement you perform a certain way. You are encouraged to ask questions, express uncertainty, and take the time you need.

Consent is ongoing and can be withdrawn at any point. You are always free to pause, postpone, or decide not to proceed. Discussions about consent and safety are transparent and held with dignity, so you feel supported without pressure.

✴️ Set, Setting, and Feeling Supported
At Afterlight, the environment you enter is as important as the work itself.

Our retreats are designed to feel calm, warm, and steady, with a grounding rhythm that invites ease and openness. Guided by PhD-level therapists and trauma- informed practitioners, the setting is both clinically safe and emotionally spacious,
reflecting Afterlight’s commitment to integration-centred care rather than a one-time “peak moment.” There is no imposed interpretation or belief system. Your experience is respected as personal and unique, and meaning is allowed to unfold in its own
way.

✴️ Non-Directive Support and Clear Boundaries
In altered states, people can feel especially open and sensitive. Our guides hold a steady, calm presence throughout — offering support that is non-directive, respectful, and attuned.

We do not analyse, interpret, or steer your experience for you. Instead, we provide a secure container for you to regulate, orient, and feel contained when needed, while always maintaining clear professional boundaries. Interactions with staff are always grounded in clear boundaries, working with strong ethical frameworks.

✴️ When Experiences Feel Challenging
Sometimes experiences can feel emotionally intense or difficult. When challenges arise, they are met with patience, grounding, and care. Nothing is rushed or forced. Safety and emotional regulation come first, and support continues beyond the
session as needed.

Our approach acknowledges that difficulty can be part of the process when supported with compassion, preparedness, and presence.

✴️ Integration as Ongoing Care
Integration is an ongoing process of gently settling insights into everyday life. While you may connect to insights and epiphanies, it’s more about meaning overtime. Afterlight offers integration support to help you reflect, understand, and balance
what you encountered, so insights become grounded, embodied, and enduring.

✴️ Ongoing Learning and Ethical Practice
Ethical psychedelic work is important to us. Our team remains committed to continual learning, supervision, and reflection, especially in the areas of ethics, risk awareness, screening, trauma-informed care, and harm-reduction. We stay engaged
with current research and regularly reflect on how to offer this work with responsibility, humility, and respect.

Inspired by contemporary psychedelic research, including the work of Professor David Luke and other leading researchers in the field, Afterlight approaches psilocybin-assisted therapy with care, respect, and thoughtfulness.

We do not promise transformation or quick answers. We honour pacing, readiness, and wellbeing above all else.

Your safety, dignity, and autonomy are always held at the centre of the Afterlight experience.
